Our most popular author resource ebook, The Author Toolkit, is available as a free download from our website. Authors who are just starting out in publishing or who want to build name recognition find this guide very helpful. Not only does it offer cost-effective ways to market independent titles, but it provides a very detailed list of recommendations for book production (editing stages, indexing, graphic design, book interior, and cover design, ebooks) as well as how to estimate production timelines and production costs.
There is a large emphasis in The Author Toolkit on the importance of assembling a team of creative professionals who can assist authors with tasks associated with self-publishing: content, line, and developmental editing; professionally design book interiors and cover design; prepress production; and social media. The problem is even authors who read the book may not fully understand what they are looking for. By providing a list of certified vendors within the book, authors can be rest assured that their burgeoning writing project will receive the careful attention of a true professional. Now is your chance to become a part of our certified team of book production professionals. There is a registration fee of $15 to cover administrative costs (we check the credentials of each participant and assure that they can demonstrate the type of professionalism and competency necessary to produce high-end books), and the listing will be active for one year. The next edition of The Author Toolkit will be published in August 2016.
What types of vendors are we looking for?
We welcome anyone who has been working in professional publishing as a book editor, copyeditor, developmental editor, or proofreader; graphic design and typography professionals (book compositors) proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; web design professionals; book marketing and social media gurus; or book publicist to participate.
How many people have downloaded The Author Toolkit?
We had over 2,000 people download The Author Toolkit over the course of the past year. It has always been a free download; no one will be paying for the information listed therein. But this also means that vendors in our network that are listed in The Author Toolkit are more likely to receive bona fide service requests from independent authors.
Why do WE charge a registration fee?
The $15 registration fee covers our administrative costs in developing the next edition of The Author Toolkit, as well as the professional background check we perform for all would-be vendors.
How long will the listing be available?
The next edition of The Author Toolkit will be available beginning in August 2016 and will be available for free download until the next edition is available in August 2017.
How do I sign up?
You will need to tell us a little about yourself and the type of work you do. Be sure to include your business (or DBA) name, website, and email. Social media profiles (LinkedIn, Twitter) are also necessary to help us determine your eligibility. In some cases we may ask for references from previous clients or a link to an online portfolio. We just want to make sure everyone who is listed as a vendor is as passionate about book publishing and providing great service as we are.

We will close registration on June 15, 2016.
